Neighborhood fast-growing and family-friendly

One of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Missoula today was actually one of the first neighborhoods established in Missoula more than a century ago.
The settlement that became Missoula got its start in the Captain John Mullan neighborhood in 1860, according to neighborhood council members. But the Mullan neighborhood has only recently been established as a more urban area.
Real estate available in this area attracts first-time homebuyers to modern subdivisions and “new-urban” neighborhoods near Reserve Street, as well as open ranch-style homes further west along Mullan Road. There are also several retirement and senior-housing options in the area.
“They are nice, modest homes. They are kept very neat, and the neighbors are very nice – that’s what makes a neighborhood,” said Pleasant View resident Telva Moore.
Hellgate Elementary and Middle School are central to many neighborhood residents.
“I think it’s a really family-oriented neighborhood,” said Jennifer Sonnichsen .
“We are really close to the school district and there are a lot of young families in the neighborhood, which we feel good about. I don’t feel worried about walking around the area at night. It feels like a safe place to be,” she said.
The Captain John Mullan Neighborhood is located in the area from Reserve to Wyoming Streets, and from the Clark Fork River to Broadway (Highway 10 West).
Many houses in the Mullan neighborhood feature modern amenities. Although the area near Reserve Street is more suburban than downtown, residents said they still enjoy being close to commercial areas.
“We like being near to shopping and restaurants. We are close enough, but not living right on Reserve,” Sonnichson said.
Neighborhood resident Kathie Snodgrass said she also enjoys being near the many shopping and dining destinations off Reserve Street.
“We have a walkable neighborhood. I enjoy the fact that I don’t have to jump in the car to do things. Even though it’s big boxes and fast food, it’s still great.” Snodgrass said.
“We can walk to the pet store. We can walk to the movie theater, and we can walk to the grocery store,” she said.
Parks in the area include West, Kelly’s Island and New Meadows.
The Pleasant View neighborhood is also in the midst of planning a brand new 5-acre park featuring picnic areas, through-trails, sport fields, tennis courts and pet areas.
Dozens of neighborhood members met at Hellgate Middle School to discuss the park master plan last week.
Sonnichson said her family is looking forward to the new park.
“We like the fact that there are green spaces in this neighborhood,” Sonnichson said.
The Mullan neighborhood also includes the Ranch Club golf course and clubhouse. River and fishing access is available and the neighborhood has easy access to the airport.
